David Furner and Jason Croker Shields
Wednesday, 1 April 2009
Over 38 teams have converged on Northbourne Oval last week to compete in the Jason Croker (year 7/8) and David Furner (9/10) shield seven a side rugby league competitions for 2009.
With a great turn out and superb weather on hand for the two days there was some great football on show. In the year 7/8 division the semi finals were battled out between Melba-Copland secondary school, Yass High, Amaroo High and Calwell High.
In the first game Yass High proved too strong for Melba-Copland running out winners 18-12, while in the second semi Amaroo High proved far too strong for Calwell having a convincing 30-6 win.
The final was battled out between Yass and Amaroo, with Yass trailing 12-8 with under a minute remaining it took a long range try to tie the score with the kick to come after the full time siren, luckily for Yass there was no error here and they ran out winners 14-12.
The next day saw the year 9-10 teams battle it out for the David Furner Shield, with Caroline Chisholm, Melba-Copland, Yass and Lyneham all winning their Pools and progressing to the Semi-finals.
The first game was a tight affair with Yass defeating Lyneham Blue 8-4, while the second semi saw Melba-Copland defeat Caroline Chisholm 24-16.
This set the seen for the possibility of Yass High taking out both the 7-8 and 9-10 titles, but not to be out done Melba-Copland put in a strong performance to run out winners 18-8.
Congratulations to the winning teams and thanks to all teams for your performances and participation during the two days, also a big thanks to the Referees, Canteen Staff and Sports Trainers for your help during the week.
