Raiders and CFMEU/Tradies donate $18,800 to The Spastic Centre
26/11/2009 1:35:50 PM

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have made a special presentation today in Canberra, with The Spastic Centre receiving a cheque for $18,800 for the 2009 Points for Cash promotion.

The Raiders in conjunction with their major sponsor the CFMEU/Tradies worked together during the 2009 season to donate $200 to The Spastic Centre for every time the Raiders scored at one of their home matches at Canberra Stadium.

With big wins such as the 56-0 defeat of the Brisbane Broncos there were plenty of donations made through the year and Raiders Five-Eighth Terry Campese said the players tried hard to make sure there was as much money donated as possible.

“I tell the boys to make sure they score as close as they can to the posts so I can kick the goal and get more money,” Campese said. “In all seriousness though this is a tremendous cause and the players are just grateful they can do their bit to raise money for The Spastic Centre.”

Secretary of the ACT Branch of the CFMEU Sarah Schoonwater said she was proud to be able to give The Spastic Centre the cheque and said it was an added incentive to get out and support the Raiders.

“The Spastic Centre do a tremendous job working with people with Cerebral Palsy and making a donation like this makes all of us who are involved very proud to be associated with them and reward them for the great work they do,” Ms Schoonwater said. “The Raiders do their bit on the field by scoring the points and to raise this much money shows they had some good home wins this year.”

ACT Fundraising manager for The Spastic Centre Geraldine Walters said the Points for Cash promotion has benefited the work they do more than people could imagine and she took the time to thank everyone for their help.

“This is the second year running for the points for cash and the money goes towards therapy services here at the centre,” Ms Walters said. “The CFMEU/Tradies and the Raiders have been fantastic for us, I’ve never been more interested in rugby league since the points for cash and we’re thankful to have them all on board.”

The CFMEU/Tradies points for cash promotion will run again in 2010.
