Laurie Daley Oval

Canberra Raiders legend, Laurie Daley, was last week honoured with a civil ceremony in his home town of Junee for what he described as “one of the proudest moments of his career.”

Junee Shire Council bestowed Daley the honour of renaming Willow Park to Laurie Daley Oval last Friday with the day also serving as the official opening of the new broadcast box and canteen at the oval.

“Some of my fondest memories growing up in Junee involve that Oval,” Daley said.

“I have been lucky enough to achieve a lot thanks to the game of Rugby League but this is one of the proudest moments of my career.

“I would like to thank Junee Shire Council for the honour and I really enjoyed catching up with everyone.”

Following the renaming of the Oval, the Junee Rugby League Football Club organised a meet-and-greet at the Junee Ex-Services Memorial Club with Daley and other special guests including Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley, Councillor Lola Cummins, Mayor of Junee Shire Council, NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr, NSW VB Blues Assistant Coach Trent Barrett and Blues legend Paul Langmack.

Junee has been a great breeding ground for the Canberra Raiders with several Junee juniors currently in the Green Machine’s junior representative ranks.

Daley is undoubtedly the town’s greatest rugby league export and the impressive character and humility the former Australian Test Captain portrayed throughout his stellar career is a great reflection of his tremendous upbringing in Junee.

The Raiders would like to strongly congratulate Laurie Daley on this prestigious honour.
