The Canberra Raiders have received the highest number of selections of any NRL side for the season opening “All-Stars” match in Brisbane on Saturday 9 February 2013.
More than 40,000 Rugby League fans could choose from all of Rugby League’s best Indigenous talent whilst fans also voted to select a representative from each of the sixteen NRL Clubs in the 20-man NRL All Stars squad.
Reece Robinson, Blake Ferguson, Joel Thompson, Jake Foster and Jack Wighton have all been selected in Laurie Daley’s Indigenous line up for the fourth annual Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match.
In addition to those selections Tom Learoyd-Lahrs was also picked in the team however the damaging forward was forced to withdraw from the game due to injury.
Former Raiders hooker Travis Waddell has also been selected in the Indigenous side. Although Waddell is no longer with the Green Machine his selection this year has come on the back of his previous playing career at the Club.
The upcoming match will be Robinson, Foster and Wighton’s debut appearance for their proud heritage.
Raiders CEO Don Furner believes the high representation of Club players is a strong reflection of the outstanding work the club does in the Indigenous community.
“Receiving the highest amount of selections for the Indigenous All Stars is certainly something for us as a club to be very proud of,” said Furner.
“The club undertakes a lot of work with Indigenous communities and Joel Thompson has recently graduated with a Certificate 3 in Indigenous Leadership.
“Indigenous players have played a big part in moulding the Raiders’ successful culture dating back to the days of Chicka Ferguson, Mal Meninga and Laurie Daley and it is brilliant that Indigenous players are still playing a crucial role in our current line-up.”
David Shillington was named as the Raider’s representative for the NRL All Stars and the front-rower was thrilled upon hearing of his selection.
“The All Stars fixture is a brilliant concept and I’m really happy be a part of it again,” enthused Shillington.
“It was a great experience and honour to make the NRL All Stars in 2010 and I’d like to thank all of the fans that voted for me again this year.
“I’m really excited to get involved in all of the community work that goes along with the game and the game itself will be a great experience. I just hope the Raiders’ Indigenous representatives don’t go too hard on me.”
