The Souths Logan Magpies put their foot to the throats of the Norths Devils early and didn’t take it off the whole match on their way to a 26-10 win at Bishop Park yesterday.

Stunned in the first half by the Redcliffe Dolphins in round 7, the Magpies responded in the best way possible, coming out of the blocks quickly in their six tries to two performance.

However, their score could have been much higher if not for an almost amusing goal-kicking performance shared between Luke Archer and Jordan Rapana with half the attempts hitting the post.

Many fans had only just made their way through the gates when Kurt Baptiste started the try-scoring for the visitors, before Jack Ahearn added to their tally soon after.

The Magpies were almost over yet again, but were deemed to be held up in a rare break from the attacking onslaught for the Devils.

Finally, the Devils were able to get their hands on the ball and they too were held up over the line with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half.

It was obvious they were going to need something special to crack the Magpies line and it came with half a minute remaining until halftime when a chip kick over the defenders’ heads was collected by fullback Shaun Carney for the first of his two tries.

The Magpies added to their 10-6 halftime lead in the opening moments of the second half when winger Rapana went up to collect a high kick and came down, busting through defenders to move his side right into attacking territory. The opportunity was then duly taken with Leon Panapa going over.

The visitors crossed for three more tries – including two for Darcy Wright – to secure them the comfortable victory.

Carney – who impressed in a beaten team – scored a consolation try for the home side in the late stages of the half when he regathered his own short kick ahead at the line.

Next weekend, the Devils will travel to BMD Kougari Oval to take on Wynnum Manly, while the Magpies will venture north to play the Pride.
