After playing in every single game in 2014, Glen Buttriss unfortunately lost his place in the Raiders top 17 in 2015, managing only three appearances in the top grade.
The off-season signing of English hooker Josh Hodgson and the positional switch of Josh McCrone meant that the pressure was on Buttriss right from the outset.
Unfortunately, the likeable rake began the year in the VB NSW Cup with Mounties with Hodgson winning the coveted number nine jersey and McCrone filling the utility role on the bench.
Although he was disappointed to lose his spot in Canberra’s line-up, Buttriss took the setback in his stride and led Mounties to three straight wins in the VB NSW Cup to start the year.
After back-to-back losses, coupled with Buttriss’ good form in reserve grade, the 30 year old was recalled by Ricky Stuart with McCrone being relegated back to the VB NSW Cup.
Buttriss was solid without being spectacular in his three appearances in the NRL, although it was hard for him to make an impact with the limited game time that he received.
After the loss to the Storm in Round 6, Buttriss was overlooked in favour of livewire Kurt Baptiste, who had been firing on all cylinders for the undefeated Mounties.
Unfortunately for Buttriss, Baptiste made the most of his opportunity and did not relinquish the interchange hooking role for the remainder of the year, whilst Hodgson was consistently proving to be one of the Green Machine’s best players.
Since making his debut for the Raiders back in 2008, Buttriss has gained a reputation as being a consummate team player and one that players enjoy playing with.
Testament to his character, Buttriss did not let the disappointment affect the positivity of his infectious personality and his leadership was instrumental in guiding Mounties to the Minor Premiership in the VB NSW Cup.
Buttriss possesses a quick pass from dummy half coupled with a marvellous sleight of hand which enabled Mounties young forwards to get on a roll and McCrone and Mitch Cornish the necessary space to create havoc for opposition defensive structures.
Mounties ended up getting knocked out by eventual premiers the Newcastle Knights one game shy of the Grand Final.
Away from the field, Buttriss works as a youth worker at Kingsford Smith Primary School on his day off after completing a Certificate III in Youth Work in 2014.
*Buttriss is undecided about his future in 2016.
