The Canberra Raiders Women’s Nines team has fallen in their first ever Women’s 9’s match after a tough match-up against the Cronulla Sharks.

The Raiders started the match on the front foot after forcing a drop out straight off the kick off. Despite a threatening run down the Sharks forced the error and escaped an early scare.

The Sharks then started to regroup and passing the ball through the hands, creating space down the sideline for Shontelle Stowers to open the scoring.

The Sharks quickly went back to back after a failed chip and chase turned into a Sharks 4 pointer thanks to Botille Vette-Welsh jumping on the loose ball making the scores 8-0.

Wanting to make up for their mistake, the Raiders then moved the ball 80 metres before drawing a penalty giving them their first real attacking chance of the match.

After testing the Sharks defence, Irene MacArthur found her way through the Sharks defence to reduce the gap to just 2 points.

After an exciting first half, both teams came out onto the field after the break determined to take the match home.

The Sharks well and truly found their groove in the second half crossing the try line with ease and taking the match away from the Raiders.

The Raiders however, never gave up with Paris Robinson becoming the beneficiary of a great backline move late in the match.

The Sharks ran home winners boasting a 28-10 victory.
