What code and age are this drill appropriate for?

This drill can be applied to both tag and tackle formats of the game and is suitable for ages 6+

Key coaching points:

  • Hands up & elbows off chest to get ball in hands early (early catch)
  • Passes out in front of target hands following the pass

Things to remember when running this drill:

  • Focus on the skill, not the drill
  • Allow your players to practice on their dominant and non-dominant side (Bilateral learning)
  • Have multiple grids/versions of the drill set up so all players are involved

Modifying the drill into a game or make it more challenging:

  • Make it a challenge! How many can the team get in a row without catching on chest, poor pass, dropping the ball, etc.
  • Make grid/passes wider

  • Passes out in front of target hands following the pass


Things to remember when running this drill:

  • Focus on the skill, not the drill
  • Allow your players to practice on their dominant and non-dominant side (Bilateral learning)
  • Have multiple grids/versions of the drill set up so all players are involved
     

Modifying the drill into a game or make it more challenging:

  • Make an attacking team and a defending team. The attacking team gets 5 chances to score a try. 1 point for a try. After their 5 chances team’s swap. Whichever team finishes with the most points wins!
  • Make grid/passes wider
  • Start with only a 2 v 1 (no second defender) to make it easier than progress to the 2 v 1 v 1

· Players should be running in space, not at the pole (defender)

Modifying the drill into a game or make it more challenging:

· If a player catches on their chest, then they must do a push up

· Set up 2 grids/sets of poles. Have 2 teams. When the coach says go, both teams race. First team to put the ball down and score get a point. First to 5 points
