Sharks win battle of Belconnen

After a two year losing streak, the Belconnen United Sharks have now won their last two matches after winning the Battle of Belconnen with 26-12 over the West Belconnen Warriors

The Sharks started the match brightly and opened the scoring when Joey Vejvoda latched on to a cutout pass to score in the corner.

Brandon Nangati barged his way over the line to double the Sharks score shortly afterwards and former Warrior Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai added the extras.

The Sharks were dealt a huge blow on the half hour mark as halfback Matt Woolnough was assisted off the field with an ankle injury.

The tide appeared to be turning for the Warriors when Trent Vaughan made a break downfield but the winger was bundled into touch by Mun Mapiou.

The Sharks ensured they went into the shed with an 18-0 lead when a towering kick was spilled by the Warriors and Matt Butz scored from the following play.

The Sharks stretched their lead early in the second half with a successful penalty but the Warriors started clawing their way back into the match.

Brandon Withers scored in the 55th minute and Tyler Peters narrowed the margin to eight points as the Warriors found joy down their left edge.

A tense final ten minutes ensured but Sonny Tupuola scored right at the death to seal the win for the Sharks.
