Junior Rep Round Three Preview

Entering round three of the junior representative season, the Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side sit one place outside of the top six.

Having lost by four points to the Sharks in the opening round and then by only six points in the second round, Raiders coach John Hawke is confident his side are close to tasting victory as long as they are able to sustain their performance levels across the whole match.

“At the moment our concentration levels are poor and we’re turning over uncontested errors and it’s hurting us. It’s costing us games,” Hawke said. “I believe we will compete with every team in the competition but it’s about a simple brand of footy, being patient and not trying to score off every single play.

“At the moment we’re not building or sustaining any pressure.”

Having seen the side improve collectively over the last two seasons Hawke believes the team is ready to take the next step.

“Before we were leaking tries but now it’s about them believing that close enough is not good enough and fighting harder,” Hawke said. “Now we’ve got to step up to a level where if we want to compete, be at the top and start winning games, we’ve got to be better.”

However, Hawke is under no illusions that this weekend’s opponent, Illawarra, will provide a stern test.

“Illawarra and Cronulla have always been the strongest in the women’s game at all levels,” Hawke said. “They play a fast brand, open brand of footy which is probably what we do a bit.

“It excites me that the game is probably going to be open and free-flowing but they can put two or three tries on you very quickly if you don’t concentrate.”
