The Canberra Raiders have thrown their support behind this year’s Group 16 Indigenous v All Stars representative round to run on March 12.
The Raiders commended Group 16 on initiatives to promote talented players in the region, but particularly acknowledging Indigenous stars.
"Supporting the Group 16 Indigenous All Stars Game on Saturday 12 March in Moruya is a perfect fit for the Raiders in regards to our Indigenous Community Strategy,” Canberra Raiders commerical and marketing manager Jason Mathie said.
The Raiders and Canberra Region Rugby League are committed to improving Indigenous health and wellbeing in our area.
“And the opportunity to support quality initiatives across our greater marketing footprint is advantageous not only for our Club and code but also Group 16 and local businesses on the Far South Coast".
The Group 16 fixture has become a fan favourite and also been used a platform to launch new initiatives.
After the success of a full contact women’s match last year, the women’s contest will also see an Indigenous v All Stars full contact clash.
Team lists are yet to be published, but it is likely Australian Jillaroo Kezie Apps will line up for the All Stars.
All four teams will feature varied talent from across Group 16 clubs with full lists to be published as they are released.
Mr Mathie said the Raiders were happy to provide the playing gear for both headline games, but would also have a presence on the day.
“Our club will also have an impactful presence on the day through our allocated NRL School 2 Work Project Officer,” he said.
“Andrew Fraser is doing some wonderful things here in Canberra in this regard and he will be on hand to promote this program to Group 16.
“[He will have] a view of identifying local Indigenous Youth in years 11 and 12 that he can help with further education, career planning and employment opportunities”.
Mr Mathie said the Raiders had received wonderful support from Group 16 and was glad to pay back in kind by getting behind the representative initiative.
“By giving back in a small way we hope such support continues long into the future. Strong sustainable partnerships that have positive effects on local communities are the key for our business.”
The Raiders have been one of the biggest proponents of adopting Group 16 players into the NRL ranks.
The club currently has three former Group 16 players with then Kennedy brothers, Rhys and Jarrad, alongside halfback Sam Williams lining up in the lime green.
The match will run in Moruya on March 12.
