The Canberra Raiders would like to pass on their condolences to the family of former long-term Board Member Michael Lightowler, who passed away at his home in Broulee over the weekend.

Mr Lightowler was a well-respected and high-ranking government official, who held several positions over a distinguished career, including Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Ambassador to China.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Mr Lightowler’s contribution to the Canberra Raiders board over many years was highly valued and he was an instrumental part of the Raiders governance during his tenure at the club.

“Michael’s time on the Raiders Board covered the difficult period of the change of ownership from News Ltd back to community ownership following Super League and he added great stability and governance during this time. Michael will be remembered by those who knew him as a valuable member of the board with a great passion for the Raiders,” Furner said. “We would like to acknowledge the wonderful years of service he gave the club and pass our condolences to his wife Melva and his family.”
