Canberra Region Rugby League have introduced a returning team to the George Tooke Shield competition, with the Gordon Highlanders set to play in the upcoming 2020 season.

The Highlanders previously played in the George Tooke Shield for five seasons, from 2008-2013.

It will be a big boost for the regional competition, which now comprises of ten teams.

The Highlanders will be based in Goulburn, a strong rugby league town. The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs were runners-up in the Canberra Raiders Cup first grade competition last year.

CRRL General Manager, Mark Vergano, says that the Highlanders will be an important addition to the competition.

“Goulburn has always been a great regional centre for rugby league, and for them to get another team is a credit to them,” Vergano said.

“It’s a great opportunity for players who maybe haven’t played in a while to come back to rugby league. They can be involved socially but also still be competitive.”
