The Country Championships kicked off over the weekend, with the Monaro Open Men’s team notching up a win while the Open Women’s side drew their game.

Open Men’s

The Monaro Open Men’s side recorded an opening round win against the Western Rams at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday.

In what was a tight game, the Colts ran home 18-14 winners.

Centre Jake Wheeler and winger Tristan Eldridge both scored doubles in the victory, with Zac Patch kicking one goal.

Mitchell Andrews, Blake Lawson and Bailey Hartwig were the try-scorers for the Western Rams.

Open Women’s

The Monaro Open Women’s team started their campaign with a hard-fought 12-all draw with the Western Rams at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday.

The scores were locked at 12-12 with ten minutes to go but neither team could break the deadlock, with each team’s defence holding strong.

The Rams scored three tries to the Colts two, but were unable to convert any of their tries. Monaro halfback Hollie Massey was perfect with the boot, with two from two.

Elly Hazelton and Bulou Baravilala were the two try-scorers for Monaro.

Round two of the Country Championships is this weekend, with the Monaro teams playing the Macarthur Wests Tigers at Kirkham Park.
