UC Stars get first win of the season after defeating Harden

The UC Stars have defeated the Harden Worhawks 18-4 at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday in round 3 of the Specsavers Katrina Fanning Shield.

The match displayed some quality attack from both sides but the UC Stars deemed too good as they came out on top to get their first win of the season.

UC Stars fullback Amanda Kyburz opened the scoring, cleaning up a loose ball and stepping multiple Harden defenders to score in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful, giving UC an early 4-0 lead.

The Stars took advantage of another Harden mistake through lock-forward Sharna Mitchell, who got an offload away to set-up winger Kiara Kennedy for a try in the corner. UC extended their lead to 8-0 in the opening 15 minutes.

The Harden Hawks fought back to score through backrower Rebecca Halls. Melissa Ings got a great offload away to put her teammate over to score their first try of the afternoon. The conversion was unsuccessful to trail the UC Stars 8-4.

Caitlin King crossed for the UC Stars after some great passing from the scrum put the winger over right before halftime. The UC stars extended their lead to 12-4 at the break.

It was a fiery start to the second half with plenty of big hits and attacking plays. Nothing could split the two sides as they traded set for set with high intensity.

The UC Stars got the breakthrough when forward Catherine Carling crossed over for a late try, heading into the final 10 minutes. Kyburz successfully converted to extend the Stars lead to 18-4.

The Stars managed to hold off the Harden side in the final minutes, closing-out an 18-4 victory at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday.
