Junior Reps Round Seven Preview

The Canberra Raiders junior representative teams will travel to Sydney this weekend to take on the Sharks in round seven of their respective competitions.

All three games will be played at PointsBet Stadium on Saturday afternoon with Canberra’s Harold Matthews Cup match kicking off proceedings at 12pm.

The Raiders Harold Matts side enters the game in sixth position and will be looking to jump up into the top four with a victory on the road. However the Sharks have had a strong start to the season, only losing the one game through the first four.

Canberra’s coming off the back of a convincing 36-18 win over the Roosters on the weekend with centre Siamani Leuluai scoring a double.

The Raiders SG Ball Cup game will follow with their match kicking off at 1.45pm.

Both teams have the same record this season of two wins, a draw and two losses, so both sides will be keen to get the upper hand with only three weeks left in the season.

Raiders SG Ball coach, Ash Barnes, says that his side needs to focus on their defence, which they’ve been working on at training, to get the victory come Saturday.

“We just need to stick to what we’ve been working on. We want to make sure that we’re strong through the middle both in attack and defence and really just look to get through our sets,” Barnes said.

“That’s where we want to be better than other teams, just trying to play that professional footy around where we turn the ball over and applying pressure with our defence.”

The match against the Sharks will be the side’s first away game of the season and Barnes says his team is excited to travel out of Canberra.

“The boys are actually itching to get on the bus. It’s a different experience and it’s actually a really exciting one for a lot of the guys to play at Shark Park,” Barnes said.

“We’re going to be on the road for the rest of the season now and that is a challenge but that’s one the boys are looking forward to.”
