NSW Cup & Jersey Flegg Round 23 Preview

The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg teams travel to Newcastle this weekend to take on the Knights, with just two rounds remaining of the regular season.

The NSW Cup side currently sit in sixth place on the ladder, three points behind the fifth placed Parramatta Eels. With the top five making the finals series, the Raiders need to win their last two games and have results go their way to finish in the top five.

The Raiders snapped a four game losing streak last weekend with a 26-22 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies. Prop Ata Mariota starred in the win, scoring a try and notching up 219 run metres, 89 post contact metres, two line breaks and 26 tackles.

There have been some changes to the team named this week ahead of the match against the Knights.

James Schiller and Elijah Anderson both return to the side as centre and wing respectively. Schiller has scored five tries in seven games, while Anderson has scored four tries in six matches.

Matt Frawley will partner Brad Schneider in the halves, with Josh James moving to the bench.

Trey Mooney starts in the second row, while Jayden Clarkson has been given the nod at lock.

The Knights are coming off a heavy 60-4 loss to the Bears but have a number of NRL players in the team this week, with Bradman Best and Enari Tuala amongst the most dangerous.

The Cup side take on the Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday as a curtain raiser to the Raiders v Knights NRL match.

Meanwhile, the Raiders Jersey Flegg team are also still in the hunt for finals, needing a win this weekend against the Knights.

The Raiders side is currently in seventh place on the ladder, two points behind the Panthers and Dragons in fifth and sixth place respectively. The Raiders will need to win both of their remaining matches and have results go their way to play finals footy.

The Raiders went down to the Wests Tigers 32-24 last weekend so will be looking to bounce back this week.

There have been a couple of changes to the side this week ahead of the Knights clash.

Kaden Williams and Josh Billing will both start in the second row, with Caleb Tohi and Tane Kiriona dropping back to the bench.

Jed Stuart has been named in the centres, while Campbell Woolnough replaces Sione Moala as hooker.

Jayden Clarkson will start in the front row, with Ata Mariota and Sam Wentworth the new faces on the interchange this week.

The Knights are coming off a strong 22-14 win over the Roosters, and have won their last three matches. They sit in second place, one win behind the Sydney Roosters.

The side travel to Newcastle on Saturday to take on the Knights at Newcastle No.2 Sports Ground.
