Raiders to take first trial to Moruya as part of NRL pre-season challenge

The Toyota Forklifts Raiders will play the Bulldogs and Tigers over consecutive weekends in February, as part of the NRL Pre-Season challenge.

First up the Raiders face the Bulldogs on Sunday February 12, with the match set to be played in Moruya at Ack Weyman Oval at 3.55pm.

The Raiders were initially looking to take a trial to the South Coast following the 2019/2020 bushfires, however the COVID Pandemic has prevented the match from happening until now.

The venue for the match holds special significance for the club, with the oval named after Moruya legend Ack Weyman, who was a valuable member of the Raiders football staff for several seasons, while his son Michael Weyman (Raider #240) began his NRL career with the club.

Ack Weyman sadly passed away in 2019 but has been immortalised at the venue alongside his son, with statues of both Ack and Michael at the ground in Moruya.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders are looking forward to playing their home trial match in a regional setting and can’t wait to take on the Bulldogs in February.

“We’ve been hoping to take a match to the South Coast for the past three years following the Bushfires in late 2019, but with COVID it’s been a challenge,” Furner said. “Thankfully we now get to take one to our regional catchment on the South Coast and it’s fitting that we take the game to Moruya where the Weyman family come from.”

The Raiders second pre-season fixture will be part of a double header at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday February 19, when the Raiders face off against the Tigers at 2.55pm before the Bulldogs play the Sharks at 5.00pm.

Ticket information for the Raiders second trial match will be communicated once available.

The match is proudly funded by the NSW Government and supported by Eurobodalla Shire Council.
