NRL Match Preview: Raiders v Dolphins

The Toyota Forklifts Raiders will travel to Redcliffe to face the Dolphins in search of their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon.

After narrowly going down to the Cowboys 19-18 in round one, the Raiders will look to build on their hard-fought loss, coming back from 18-nil down to narrowly lose to a field goal in the final minutes of the game.

Ricky Stuart has made just one change to the team to face the Dolphins this weekend with Albert Hopoate replacing Jordan Rapana, who has been suspended for the next three weeks after electing to take the early guilty plea.

The Green Machine will have many positives to take out of their loss last week, scoring two converted tries and conceding just one point in the second half to last year’s semi-finalists.

Fixing up their discipline and negative play for the upcoming game will be one of Stuart’s priorities in their training week on the Sunshine Coast after making 11 errors and missing 39 tackles last weekend.

The Dolphins will prove a worthy opponent as they will be looking to make it back-to-back wins after their first-ever win in NRL history against competition heavyweights, the Sydney Roosters.

The match will play host at the Dolphins' spiritual home ground, Kayo Stadium, on Saturday with kick-off set for 5:30 pm (AEDT).

Key Match Ups

Hudson Young v Felise Kaufusi

When the words fast, fiery and fierce get thrown around in the world of Rugby League, two names often mentioned are Felise Kaufusi and Hudson Young.

Young had a stellar season last year scoring match-winning tries at crucial moments for the Raiders, and clenching must-needed wins that helped them on their way to play finals football in 2022.

Awarded the NRL Coaches Award at the 2022 Meninga Medal night, Young had his career-best season in which he claimed equal top try scorer for the team with 14 tries, and averaged over 106 running metres per game.

After a stellar performance last week against the Roosters, Kaufusi earned the Artie Legacy award after providing some brutal hits that forced some big errors to turn the match on its head and help the Dolphins get back in the game.

Entering his ninth season in the NRL, Kaufusi will need to bring all his experience from his eight seasons under the Melbourne Storm system, when facing his opposite number Hudson Young.

This matchup is sure to be one to look out for as dominant individual displays can win or lose the game for either side.

Nick Cotric v Jamaye Isaako

When it comes to clinical finishers and experienced wingers, Jamayne Isaako and Nick Cotric come to mind for many rugby league fans.

Returning to the Raiders in 2022 after stint with the Bulldogs, Cotric reclaimed his position on the right wing for the Raiders, scoring seven tries and only missing five games across the whole of last season.

His big defensive plays will play a key role in restricting the Dolphins from scoring points on the right edge while also making important metres coming out of their end when under pressure.

Partnering with Matthew Timoko on the right edge will allow the Raiders some scoring opportunities with their flair and skill on and off the ball.

After stagnant seasons in previous years with the Broncos and Titans, Isaako will be looking to relinquish his form of old with the new Dolphins outfit under coach Wayne Bennett.

Coming out of round one as the competition’s top point scorer with two tries and four conversions, Isaako will be looking to build on this form and string some consistent performances in the weeks to come.

Kenny Bromwich v Elliott Whitehead

Entering his seventh season in the NRL, captain Elliott Whitehead is a stalwart of the Raiders side.

After reaching 150 games for the club in round six in 2022, and playing over 300 career matches in rugby league, Whitehead brings a plethora of experience and composure to the team as well as making tough runs leading from the front.

Having led his team to a grand final in 2019, Whitehead has the ability to control the team on and off the park and remain calm in pressure situations.

Making 33 tackles and 79 running metres last weekend, Whitehead will be looking to build on these statistics this season.

Joining the newly admitted Dolphins side, Kenny Bromwich has hit the ground running making all 34 of his tackles against the Roosters in round one.

The two-time premiership second rower has over 200 NRL games in his career and is a veteran amongst those in his position.

Playing under Bellamy at the Melbourne Storm for the past ten years, Bromwich joins Bennett as a skillful and hardworking forward that can inspire his teammates around him to play to the best of their abilities.

Head to Head

This will be the first time these two sides will meet in the history of the NRL, with the two teams playing each other again in April at McDonald’s Park, Wagga Wagga.
