Katrina Fanning Shield: Round 9 Wrap

Round nine of the Katrina Fanning Shield brought some big scores and an entertaining comeback with some quality footy on show around the grounds.

Gungahlin Bulls 28 d Yass Magpies 16

The Gungahlin Bulls remain undefeated after an important victory over the second-placed Yass magpies.

Tijana Zdravevska opened up the scoring for the Bulls, scoring in the corner off the back of a Hollie Massey grubber in the fourth minute to gain an early 4-nil lead.

Yass replied in the 22nd minute, with Abbey Brill forcing her way through three Gungahlin defenders to ground the ball in the 22nd minute. Kaitlyn Andrews successfully converted the try to give the visitors a 6-4 lead.

Yass crossed over again just minutes later with lock-forward Andrews scoring down the right edge thanks to a set of silky hands. Andrews converted her own try to take a 12-4 lead at halftime.

Although Yass won the first half, it was Gungahlin who dominated the second, scoring five tries to the Magpies one, running away with the game to cap off an impressive 28-16 comeback.

Yass will look to regroup next week and ensure they stay focused for the entire 70 minutes when they take on Gungahlin again at home.

Goulburn City Bulldogs 62 d Woden Valley Rams 6

The Bulldogs hosted the Rams on Saturday, locking in a dominant victory to make it three wins in a row.

Goulburn’s second rower Laura Fletcher scored the first try of the day, helping the hosts gain some early momentum with a 4-0 lead by the fourth minute.

The Bulldogs were let off the leash and ran rampant this week, running in another six tries to finish off the first half 34-0, with Fletcher completing her double.

Much like the first half, it was Goulburn who kept scoring, with fullback Shaelee Tobin crossing over in the 31st minute.

Despite the score, the Rams were not going down without a fight, as half Lara Cosgrove scored Woden’s only try of the day with a big left foot step and dummy fooling the opposition defence. Cosgrove converted her own try to reduce the deficit to 6-40 in the 38th minute.

Goulburn soon took control of the game once again, running in another four unanswered tries with Chloe Waddell completing her double to cap off a dominant 62-6 victory.
