Junior Reps Preview: Round One

The 2024 junior representative competitions kick off this weekend, with the Canberra Raiders set to take on the Newcastle Knights in a triple header on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen.

UNE Harold Matthews Cup

The Canberra Raiders will look to begin the Harold Matthews Cup season with a victory, when they take on last year's runners up Newcastle Knights.

The Raiders HM Cup side had a great season in 2023, flying home to finish fifth in the competition and qualify for finals.

Full of young talent, they unfortunately fell to the eventual premiers, Canterbury Bulldogs, in a 25-18 thriller.

This year, the Raiders will look to develop and build another strong season under coach Rourke O'Sullivan.

The side will be led by Queanbeyan Blues junior Troy Codey, who graduates from the 2023 SLE Andrew Johns Cup, having played a big role in Monaro's finals run.

These sides haven't met in the Harold Matthews Cup since round five of the 2021 season, where both sides will look to begin their 2024 campaign with a win.

Kick-off is at 11:00am Saturday 3rd of February at Raiders Belconnen.

UNE SG Ball Cup

The Canberra Raiders SG Ball Cup side will also host the Newcastle Knights this weekend in a blockbuster round one clash.

The Raiders will be out to avenge their 2023 season, which saw a minor premiership before falling to Parramatta in week two of the finals series.

After the junior rep squads were finalised and announced earlier this week, the entire Raiders program look fit and ready to fire across the nine-week competitions.

The Raiders SG Ball Cup side will have a huge task at hand right off the bat, as they meet last year's runners up Newcastle.

The Raiders will look to some of their strike weapons on the edge, led by their halfback Keahn Skipps.

Australian Schoolboy hooker Xavier Cacciotti will also be in for a huge season, after gathering a small taste of SG Ball Cup last year off the bench.

Meanwhile, the Knights bolster a strong forward pack, in which the Raiders will need to keep in check in order to kickstart their season with an important win.

Kick-off is at 12:30pm Saturday 3rd of February at Raiders Belconnen.

Westpac Tarsha Gale Cup

The Tarsha Gale Cup kicks off this weekend with the Canberra Raiders set to round out the triple header against the Newcastle Knights in round one of the competition.

The Raiders will be out for revenge after their 16-6 loss to Newcastle in round one of last year's finals series.

In almost a completely new-look side in 2024, the Raiders will look to develop some young talent and compete throughout the nine-round competition.

Canberra lock-forward India Dyball will captain the side, bringing some important experience from last year's Tarsha Gale Cup.

Newcastle will also be out to make improvements, after being eliminated 40-4 in week two of the finals by the eventual premiers, Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy.

Kick-off is at 2:00pm Saturday 3rd of February at Raiders Belconnen.
