The Raiders NSW Cup side went down 38-16 to the Newtown Jets in a disappointing performance in week one of the finals series.

Canberra will get a second chance when they look to bounce back against the Penrith Panthers this Sunday at Leichardt Oval.

The Jets applied all the pressure early, scoring three tries in the opening 20 minutes to lead 18-nil.

Raiders halfback Mitch Henderson was able to break the oppositions defence open, stepping off his right to score and cut the deficit to 18-6.

It wasn't the Raiders' afternoon, after a kick ricocheted and landed in the arms of Newtown centre Chris Vea'ila, who ran 60 metres to grab his second of the day.

The Raiders were able to bag two late tries through Owen Pattie and Manaia Waitere, but it wasn't enough as Newtown claimed victory and advance to the major semi final.

Canberra will turn their focus to Penrith in a do-or-die semi-final on Sunday afternoon at Leichardt Oval.
