The West-Belconnen Warriors have defeated the Queanbeyan Blues 24-10 in a gritty game of football at Seiffert Oval.
It was clear blue skies when the Blues kicked off against the Warriors in the top of the table clash.
It was an error riddled start from both teams, but it was the Blues who had counts of possession on the Westies line but couldn’t get over for their first try with some strong defence from the Warriors.
The Warriors opened the scoring with an early kick to the corner from Ryan McQueen and an awful bounce led to a bobble by Dakai Bolotagici in the in-goal which saw McQueen retrieve the ball and go over to lead 4-0.
McQueen continues to have a terrific day with the boot as another early kick into the left pocket sees another horrible bounce for Connor Williams to spill the ball between his legs which is toed forward from McQueen to give Westies an 8-0 lead. Kick from Brendan Withers was successful to make it 10-0.
An error from the Warriors gave Blues another opportunity to crack the terrific defensive line, but again, the Westies have drawn their swords and haven’t let anyone through as they head into halftime 10-nil up.
Off the back of an unforced error from the Blues, George Pohahau picked the ball up and beat two defenders to score Westies' third try to give them a 14-0 lead. Withers nails it from the sideline to make it 16-0.
The Warriors coming out of their own half make an error to give the Blues a chance to grab their first points 15 minutes into the half, but once again it was the remarkable defence of the Warriors to decline.
A dangerous charge at the legs from Jack Anderson on Calab Edwards saw him placed on report put the Warriors on the charge looking for their fourth try of the afternoon.
The Warriors found the line again with a trick play from dummy half and Withers bumping off defenders to score in the corner to give them a healthy 20-0 lead with 12 minutes still left to play.
McQueen has had a day out as a lovely floating bomb put pressure on George Morseu who dropped the ball and Pohahau picked it up and gave it to Calab Edwards who scores the Warriors fifth try to go 24-0 up.
An error from the Warriors gave the Blues an opportunity to score their first points five minutes before fulltime.
Off the back of the scrum, it was Dylan Mclachlan who blitzed through the middle of the Warriors defence to score next to the post to cut the deficit 24-6.
A scuffle deep in West Belconnen's half saw Tom Haddad go to the bin for foul play.
The home side capitalised through a Jack Anderson scoot from dummy half to cross for the Blues' second try right before full time.
The Warriors secured a 24-10 victory to go to the top of the ladder and remain undefeated for the 2025 season.
