West Belconnen Warriors Power Their Way To Victory

The West Belconnen Warriors power through the Belconnen United Sharks with a strong 46-12 victory at NSWRLHQ Bruce on Saturday.

Although the Sharks looked strong in the first half, unforced errors and a strong defensive and attacking effort from the Warriors handed the game to them.

Only seconds after kick-off an error by the Warriors gave the Sharks an early opportunity to add the first points. However, a lost ball disrupted this chance.

Both sides continued to trade sets until a superb play by Warriors’ halfback Calab Edwards, who ran down his own kick planting the ball on the right edge. A missed conversion made the score 4-nil five minutes in.

The Warriors continued this momentum with a strong pass by George Pohahau to Kylan Edwards, slipping through the Sharks’ defensive left edge to score. Brandon Withers nailed the ball through the posts.

A high tackle against the Sharks gave the Warriors possession, with a line break by Calab Edwards in the following set, paving the way for Tom Haddad to land the ball directly under the post, bringing the score to 16-nil with 20 minutes left in the first half.

The Sharks, desperate to get back into the game, were able to regain possession after a dropped Warriors ball. They almost made their way to the try line, but the ball was stripped in a tackle.

The Sharks almost found the line again, but a strong defensive performance from the Warriors left them stranded short of the try line.

Finally, luck struck for the Sharks after a successful in air contest forced an error by the Warriors 15 metres from the Sharks’ line, capitalising on this error as Nic Marshall busted his way through the Warriors’ defence. A successful conversion by Zac Patch narrowed the score to 6-16 just before the halftime break.

The start of the second half saw both sides playing set-for-set, with the Sharks coming dangerously close to the line a few minutes in.

This static play continued as errors plagued both sides, with neither team able to make enough ground in their tackle count.

The Warriors struggled to extend their lead as a high energy Shark’s side continued to hold their attacking plays at bay. This was until Calab Edwards shot in a kick to the right edge where Kylan Edwards was waiting to cross the line and add another four points for the Warriors. Withers kicks with no hesitation bringing the score to 22-6.

The Sharks’ earlier luck turned as Jacob Piper was sent to the bin for a professional foul. The Warriors capitalised on having a 12-man opposition with Kylan Edwards bagging his third try of the game.

A dummy play by Calab Edwards allowed him to break the Sharks’ line and run 50 metres down the park. Tom Haddad found space on the left edge extending the Warriors score 34-6 with 12 minutes left.

The Sharks’ sin bin proved expensive with the Warriors moments later grabbing their fourth try of the half with Withers running directly under the post.

With a full team back on the park, the Sharks tried to regain possession, however, they were no match for the Warriors with Harry Brown barging across the line. Withers easily added the extras.

With only two minutes left the Sharks successfully narrowed the margin with Adams Walters slicing his way across the line, with a successful conversion by Patch.

However, at the full-time siren, the Warriors sealed a well-deserved 46-12 victory.
