NSW Cup & Jersey Flegg: Round 22 Wrap

In wet weather conditions, the Canberra Raiders NSW Cup side walked away with a dominant victory over the Magpies while our Jersey Flegg boys fell to the Tigers in a close loss last weekend.

Knock On Effect NSW Cup

The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup team took out an impressive 58-18 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies last Saturday at Lidcombe Oval in Sydney to put them into seventh place on the ladder.

The Raiders came out swinging, as second rower Noah Martin bagged a hat-trick within the first 18 minutes to put Canberra firmly in control, assaulting the line for a cluster of short-range tries.

At the half, the Raiders held a commanding lead of 24 points, thanks to efforts from prop Pasami Saulo, and second rower Joe Roddy.

The Raiders showed no signs of fatigue in the second half, switching their attacking focus to the backline as winger Michael Asomua and centre Jensen Taumoepeau each logged a double, before fullback Chevy Stewart iced out the game with a long range try in the 76th minute.

Raiders Halfback Adam Cook was also instrumental in the win, shooting 8 from 10 to add 16 extra points to the scoreline.

This win puts the Canberra Raiders Cup team on a three-game-streak which puts them in good stead to keep climbing higher into the top eight; a metric to keep in mind as they face off against the second-placed Dragons this weekend at Collegians Sporting Complex in Wollongong.

Jersey Flegg Cup

After a hard-fought first half, the Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team have fallen 25-14 to the Wests Tigers at Lidcombe Oval in Sydney.

Winger Sylas Simon and fullback Mutua Brown sparked an early lead for the Raiders with a pair of quick tries out wide, but the Tigers clawed their way back to level the scores at 10-all by halftime.

After the interval, the Tigers hit twice to put the host side up 18-10, demanding hard work from the Raiders to keep them in the contest.

Canberra would threaten a comeback as the Tuialii brothers linked up in the corner to put Luke Tuialii over for a try in the 67th minute, but a late try from the Tigers and a match-sealing field goal would lock the final score up at 25-14.

The Raiders remain in fourth place on the ladder and will regroup and recover pending this Saturday’s clash against the Dragons in Wollongong.
