Warriors regain third spot in firey Belconnen Derby

The West Belconnen Warriors defeat their cross-town rivals in dominant fashion at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday afternoon.

In what was a fiery edition of the Belconnen derby the Warriors held their nerve and claimed an important win in their final's aspirations, returning to third position.

An error in the Sharks opening attacking set of the game provided the home side with an early opportunity to opening the scoring.

The Warriors thought they opened the scoring after a dynamic movement to the right edge, only for the final pass to Sam Hyland to be ruled forward by the officials.

Despite being under pressure defensively, it was the Belconnen United Sharks who opened the scoring after an error from Warrior's fullback Tom Haddad, providing field position for the visitors which was converted by Zac Patch burrowing over from dummy half.

It was the leaders for both sides standing up inside the first twenty minutes, with a dart down the blindside from Warriors Captain Coach Ryan McQueen creating a chance which George Pohahau took with both hands, levelling the scores at six a piece.

In the following set, the Sharks were reduced to 12 as Tommy Watego was sent to the sin bin for dangerous contact.

The home side wouldn't need to wait long for their second, with Ryan McQueen taking advantage of the extra number showing the ball to his outside attackers and slicing straight through to give the Warriors the lead for the first time.

Kylan Edwards extended the lead for the Warriors thanks to quick hands from fullback Tom Haddad putting the crafty halfback into space finishing well in the corner.

The Warriors made it three tries against twelve Sharks defenders through a shift the right which put Sam Hyland into space on the grandstand side of the ground before a draw and pass of the fullback saw Caanan Leuluai cross to make the score 20-6.

An obstruction penalty provided the visitors with much needed field position, which they converted into points with an attacking movement to the left seeing Luke Connolly dive over in the corner.

In the lead up, Zac Patch was hit solidly late by Noa Vanisi which saw the interchange forward sent to the sin bin.

Despite, having a number less it would be the Warriors next to score, as Kylan Edwards created something out of nothing, fooling the Sharks defensive line with a dummy and going over untouched for his second of the afternoon.

In a frantic first half which saw two sin bins to either side, it was the Warriors who entered the break with a healthy 26-10 lead.

It was the Warriors who started the second half better of the two teams, as an error from Dean Wilson at the back was pounced upon by Leuluai to score his second of the afternoon.

The dominance from the home side continued as Withers lit the grandstand up with a scintillating run down the right touch line which was highlighted by an in and away on the fullback, extending the home sides lead.

Sharks Captain Coach Zac Patch was sin binned for his involvement in engulfing a scuffle after a high tackle penalty, with the sin bin the third of the contest.

The Warriors took advantage of the extra number once again, with a barnstorming run from Vanisi breaking the game wide open finding Hyland who swan dived his way to the try line.

Belconnen would score two tries in as many minutes through Arantangi and Ravouvou, however these would be purely consolation tries.

Taylor Withington placed the icing on the cake for the home side with a try in the final two minutes making the final score 50-22, as the Warriors regain third spot.
