Ashes 1st Test: Walsh lights up Wembley as Kangaroos go one-up

The Kangaroos have made the perfect start to the 2025 Ashes series with a 26-6 victory at Wembley.

Broncos superstar Reece Walsh continued his stunning season with a man of the match performance on Test debut, running for 236 metres, breaking five tackles and scoring two tries.

Another Test debutant, Mark Nawaqanitawase, also racked up more than 200 run metres, while Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Pat Carrigan were strong in the middle.

The Kangaroos have held the Ashes since 1973 and head to Liverpool for the second Test with the upper hand after a solid victory although their tally of 14 errors will be of some concern to coach Kevin Walters.

Another concern will be the fitness of skipper Isaah Yeo, who played just nine minutes before copping a head knock as he tried to tackle Dom Young. He was sent for a HIA and was unable to return.

The Ashes: England v Kangaroos

England v Kangaroos: First Test

SOS for AJ: England's attack lacked potency and their only try came from a dummy half scamper from hooker Daryl Clark. The outside backs rarely troubled the Kangaroos defence although Dom Young and Herbie Farnworth did combine for 250 run metres. Titans speedster AJ Brimson was 18th man for the first Test and surely must be in line for a call-up to add some spark out wide.

Crichton all class: The Roosters back-rower was a constant menace to England on the left edge with a try double and 144 run metres. Crichton also had six tackle breaks and two line breaks.

Full-time: That's a wrap at famous Wembley and the Kangaroos savour a 20-point win with Reece Walsh producing a dazzling Test debut.

Daryl Clark Try

76 min: England are on the board through hooker Daryl Clark, who grabs his second Test try in his 14th international. The No.9 got into dummy half from close range and was able to hit and spin and plunge over. Mikey Lewis converts. Kangaroos 26-6.

76 min: Mikey Lewis grubbers and Nathan Cleary is penalised for obstructing Jake Wardle on the chase.

Reece Walsh 2nd Try

71 min: A double on debut for Reece Walsh after Cameron Munster and Nathan Cleary combine to put the fullback into space before Walsh finds Gehamat Shibasaki. The centre draws the final defender and sends it back inside to Walsh in support for another four-pointer. Cleary converts. Kangaroos 26-0.

67 min: Tino Fa'asuamaleaui is pinged for an incorrect play the ball to give England another chance but the polish isn't there close to the line as a Kai Pearce-Paul flick pass bounces off George Williams and goes forward.

Angus Crichton 2nd Try

65 min: A second try for Angus Crichton again courtesy of Cameron Munster who takes the line on and slips a quality offload to his back-rower who strides away. Nathan Cleary adds the extras. Kangaroos 20-0.

59 min: The Kangaroos create space on the left but Gehamat Shibasaki's pass goes behind Josh Addo-Carr and the opportunity is lost. That's 12 errors for the Kangaroos.

57 min: Nathan Cleary goes to the line and looks to find outside support but Morgan Knowles' tackle forces the ball loose.

54 min: Harry Grant earns a line dropout and England go with a short dropout and come up with possession through Dom Young.

Litten boots a 40/20

52 min: Test debutant Jez Litten comes up with a 40-20 kick out of dummy half to give England a chance to strike back.

49 min: Dom Young finds some space on the right wing but is taken in cover by Gehamat Shibasaki and throws a forward pass as he falling to the ground.

Angus Crichton Try

45 min: Angus Crichton grabs the Kangaroos' second try after taking a pass from Cameron Munster and slicing through from 30 metres. Nathan Cleary converts. Kangaroos 14-0.

44 min: Mikey Lewis kicks on the last but doesn't make good contact and only picks up 30-odd metres.

Walsh is lighting up Wembley

42 min: Reece Walsh explodes into the back field on kick return and finds Josh Addo-Carr who is ankle tapped by Herbie Farnworth in a trysaver.

Asking questions: George Williams took the line on a number of times and finished the first half with 69 metres from 10 probing runs. The England skipper had a couple of tackle breaks and forced a line dropout with a neat grubber in a polished display in his 21st Test match.

Making his Mark: Dual international Mark Nawaqanitawase had some good moments in the opening 40 with 11 runs for 134 metres and a line break and a tackle break. His speed down the right flank proved a handful for England.

Half-time: Just the four penalties in the first half and plenty of ball in play as the two sides combine for four line breaks. Both sides completed 13 of 18 sets at 72 per cent as the last pass went astray on a number of occasions.

40 min: A penalty against Jez Litten for holding Reece Walsh back as he tried to support a line break hands Nathan Cleary a shot from right in front. The Kangaroos No.7 makes no mistake with the penalty shot. Kangaroos 8-0.

38 min: England make a break down the left wing and Tom Johnstone kicks back inside for the chasers but the kick is a tad too strong and rolls dead.

37 min: Cameron Munster hoists a bomb and Josh Addo-Carr is penalised for taking Dom Young out in the contest and denying him a fair catch.

34 min: George Williams nudges a grubber into the in goal and Nathan Cleary is forced to knock it dead. The Kangaroos go with a short dropout and England knock the ball on in the contest.

32 min: Mark Nawaqanitawase pushes a pass coming out of his own end and the ball goes to ground to hand England great field position.

29 min: An adventurous flick pass from Gehamat Shibasaki hits Angus Crichton in the face and then the hands as the knock on is called.

26 min: Hudson Young comes up with an error to invite England onto the attack but Jake Wardle's dropped ball lets the Kangaroos off the hook.

Reece Walsh Try

22 min: The Kangaroos create space on the right as Reece Walsh puts Mark Nawaqanitawase away and the winger sends a pass back inside to Kotoni Staggs who finds Walsh supporting on the inside and the Broncos gun dives over for a try on Test debut. Nathan Cleary converts. Kangaroos 6-0.

17 min: Reuben Cotter and Angus Crichton produce some strong defence on Matty Lees who spills the ball.

16 min: Cameron Munster finds Reece Walsh who tries to float a trademark 'harbour bridge' pass to Josh Addo-Carr but the ball goes behind the winger and into touch for an England scrum feed.

15 min: Nathan Cleary goes to the air for Mark Nawaqanitawase to compete but Tom Johnstone comes up with a safe catch.

13 min: Reece Walsh is ruled to have played the ball incorrectly and turns the ball over. The Kangaroos fire in a captain's challenge which proves successful after the bunker rules John Bateman pushed Walsh down as he tried to play the ball.

10 min: A poor pass by Jack Welsby sails over Dom Young's head and into touch.

9 min: Kangaroos skipper Isaah Yeo leaves the field for a HIA. He fails the assessment and is out for the rest of the game.

8 min: Enterprising attack from England on the right edge as Herbie Farnworth regathers a George Williams grubber and has his pass knocked down by Reece Walsh as he tries to find his winger.

6 min: England return the favour with an error through prop Ethan Havard.

5 min: The first mistake of the game as Hudson Young puts the ball down under pressure from Jake Wardle.

2 min: Mark Nawaqanitawase gets his first touch on Test debut as he fields a Mikey Lewis kick and brings the ball back strongly.
