"This round isn’t just about footy": North Canberra Bears Kick off 2026 with I Got You Round

With the Canberra Region Rugby League Junior competition kicking off last weekend, there was one club sparking an important conversation.

The North Canberra Bears MRLFC opening weekend of the season saw their entire club play at home, supporting the I Got You charity in their mental health round.

Established in 2021, after the tragic passing of Josh Clarke, Josh's family have been dedicated to creating a lasting legacy for their son and brother, through their family run charity.

The I Got You charity is dedicated to starting important conversations regarding men’s mental health and raising suicide awareness without fear, judgement or stigma.

2026 was the third iteration of the Bears I Got You – Mental Health Awareness Round with the weekend built on community, connection and ensuring no one feels like they are going through something alone, with this sentiment shared by Bears president Tommy Russell.

“Every corner of the grounds had something happening — and every moment carried the same message: no one in our community stands alone,” Tommy said.

Throughout the weekend, the Club honours the memory of Matt Schweitzer, a junior life member who passed away in 2018 and Josh Clarke by presenting medals to our Under 12’s team, representing Josh’s Under 12 Grand Final win in 2008 and our Under 16’s teams reflecting Matt’s commitment to the Bears.

On Friday night, the Schweitzer family presented the Matt Schweitzer Medal - Under 16’s I Got You Round MVP medal and on Sunday the Josh Clarke Medal - Under 12’s I Got You Round MVP was presented by Josh’s family to the Under 12’s player of the match.

“One of the most meaningful traditions of our I Got You Round is the presentation of our special medals.”

“As always, we were honoured to have Leesa (Josh’s mum) and Taylor & Mackenzie (Josh’s sisters) with us, sharing their strength, love, and ongoing support for our club and our players.”

Whilst there are often battles on the field, a round like this provides the Rugby League community with perspective, whilst demonstrating the power the sport has in bringing people together, especially when times are tough.

“The Bears are deeply grateful for the incredible support shown by the junior league community.”

“Days like this remind us why we do what we do — why we show up, why we look out for each other, and why the message I Got You matters so much.”

“This round isn’t just about footy. It’s about awareness, connection, and reminding every young person that they are seen, valued, and supported.”

The North Canberra Bears would like to thank everyone in their community for making the I Got You Mental Health Awareness Round one of the most meaningful days on their calendar.
