Read Like a Raider: Inspiring the Next Generation of Readers

The Canberra Raiders have teamed up with Kaleen Primary School to pilot an exciting new literacy initiative: Read Like a Raider.

Raiders stars Josh Papalii, Hollie-Mae Dodd, Jayden Brailey, Matty Nicholson and Vena Patuki-Case joined the students of Kaleen Primary School today to kick off the challenge.

Designed to inspire a love of reading across the whole school community, the five-week challenge encourages students to train their minds the same way athletes train their bodies, through consistency, effort and fun.

The program, developed by Kaleen Primary School Librarian Krissy McCombe in collaboration with Raiders Community Manager Jess Crisp, aims to strengthen literacy skills by encouraging students to log as many reading minutes as possible. Whether it’s independent reading, reading aloud, or listening to a story, every minute counts.

Kaleen Primary School Principal Nicole Graham notes, “At Kaleen Primary School, improving reading outcomes is a key focus of our school improvement work. We are deliberately building students’ motivation, engagement and confidence as readers, because reading underpins all learning. Read Like a Raider is a great example of how we are bringing this to life, supporting our students to develop strong reading habits that will set them up for success."

Students will continue working towards a Grand Final celebration in June, with incentives along the way, earning a “Try Time” raffle ticket for every 100 minutes of reading completed.

Kaleen Primary Schools Library Technician Krissy McCombe explains, "At Kaleen Primary, we’re passionate about helping every child develop a love of reading. The Read Like a Raider Reading Challenge brings that vision to life in a powerful way, using the influence of our local rugby players to motivate and inspire our students to build strong reading habits and train their brains just as they would train their bodies"

By combining literacy with the excitement of rugby league, Read Like a Raider is helping students build lifelong reading habits, one page at a time.

Good luck to all the Students at Kaleen Primary School ahead of their Reading Challenge.
