The Toyota Forklifts Canberra Raiders have re-signed impressive rookie forward Joe Roddy on a new deal until the end of the 2030 season.
Roddy made his NRL debut in Round 27 last year against the Dolphins, scoring a double off the bench, and has played three NRL games so far in 2026.
The three-year extension on his current deal (end of 2027) will keep Roddy at the club for a further four years, with his development continuing after progressing from the Raiders' junior representative program into the NRL squad.
“It’s really cool to re-sign and to get some clarity around my future. Obviously, I want to stay at this place. It's like another home to me and, ever since I first came over to Canberra, I've loved it,” Roddy said. “I’ve always said that if I could, I’d want to be a one-club player and, obviously, this is a small step towards doing that. But I’m really excited to be extended until 2030.”
Joe Roddy Try on debut
Roddy, 22, played his junior football for Group 9 club Tumut Blues, highlighting yet another player from the Raiders' catchment area to graduate from the junior representative program into the NRL squad.
“Tumut is only two hours away from Canberra, so to go home and see the young kids and give them someone to look up to and be a role model for them is really special. To be able to make it from a small country town gives them belief too.”
Roddy, who was primarily a back-rower coming through the grades, has shown his versatility in the NRL, playing minutes both in the middle and on an edge.
Joe Roddy gets a double
“It’s good to have a bit of versatility across positions, especially in today’s game. But you couldn’t ask to learn from better players than Papa, Taps, Big Red, Huddo and all those kinds of blokes,” he said.
Raiders NRL Recruitment Manager Chris Hutchison is pleased to re-sign another quality young forward long-term, further boosting the depth of the squad and highlighting another player who has come through the club's pathways system.
“Joe is a great young player who’s come through our pathways and developed into an NRL player,” Hutchison said. “He’s tough, works hard and has a great attitude, which earned him his NRL debut. We look forward to him getting more opportunities as he continues his career with the club.”
