Round 16 of the Canberra Raiders Cup kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, with just three weeks left in the regular season and only four finals spots up for grabs. Every match this weekend carries weight, with ladder positions tightening and momentum becoming more important than ever.
Belconnen United Sharks v Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Saturday 8th August, NSWRL HQ Bruce, 3:00pm
The top‑of‑the‑table showdown kicks off Round 16 as the second‑placed Belconnen United Sharks host the competition leaders, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.
The Belconnen United Sharks enter this weekend off the back a comprehensive victory against the Gungahlin Bulls, with Captain Coach Zac Patch pleased with how his side stayed in the grind and produced a strong second half.
"I was very happy with the second half, with how we attacked the football and put some points on and showed where we are at," Patch said.
Making a case for the inform team of the competition, the Sharks will be looking for seven straight victories on the weekend, which Patch was unaware of due to the mindset of his side.
"We just take it week by week, that's probably the first time I've heard someone say we have won that many in a row, so it's good but we've done means nothing now and it's all about building into these finals and it would be awesome to beat the Roos this weekend."
After missing the finals last year, this weekend poises an exciting proposition for the home side with an opportunity to secure a confidence boosting win against a title contender.
"A big one for us is this weekend, we are going out there to go into finals with a little bit of confidence from beating the Kangaroos and a big focus is on our defence."
The Sharks will look to overturn the round six result which saw the Kangaroos claim a tight eight-point victory, with the Belconnen dummy half calling for improved discipline this time out.
"We learnt a lot from that day, and a big thing was our discipline."
"It hurt us having two in the bin and both of them at the same time, I think we kept them scoreless when we had 11 out on the field but it really hurt us in the backend with energy, so that's where I'm hoping we are lot better."
Meanwhile, the Kangaroos enter this matchup on a win streak of their own, with Adam Quinlan pleased with his team's response from consecutive losses after their bye.
"We had a slow start after our bye and the long weekend there and lost a couple in a row so it's good to see us build a little bit of form and looking forward to the rest of the season," Quinlan said.
This season is Quinlan's first in charge as the Captain Coach at the Kangaroos and is thoroughly enjoying his time leading the club into the potentially next successful chapter.
It's been really good, I've been quite lucky it was left in a good position from Sam and the club before that, we did lose a couple key players but everyone that's been there has hit the ground running from the start of the season and made my job really easy."
With a bye after this top of the table clash, Quinlan is hoping that his side can build into their finals campaign and enjoy their footy in the process.
"Try to build on what we started already and build a little bit of momentum, after this week we have a bye and then there's two games leading into the finals."
"We would like to not be a sluggish and slow starting after this bye, like we were last time and just trying to play the game that we have, not overthink ourselves to much and enjoy ourselves while we do it because it's the time of year that we train for."
Quinlan is wary of the dangers this week's opponents poses and will have side on high alert defensively to shut down their key areas.
"They play a really good brand of rugby league to watch, it's a good spectacle for the neutral, they've got some strike all over the park which makes them a very difficult team to stop, we will do our best to minimise those guys and see how we go."
With both teams firing and top spot on the line, this clash shapes up to be one of the biggest of the season.
Queanbeyan Blues v Gungahlin Bulls, Saturday 8th August, Seiffert Oval, 3:00pm
The Queanbeyan Blues faced off against the Gungahlin Bulls at Seiffert Oval in an electrifying clash.
The Blues return home sitting third on the ladder and aiming to strengthen their finals position.
Last week they defeated the Woden Valley 26‑18 in a tight contest that saw the entire team working together to spread the attack and overpower the fierce Rams defence.
Jamie Mazzarol Kotz converted three of the five tries and remains the second highest point scorer of the competition.
Meanwhile, the Bulls are coming off a tough 34‑6 loss to the Sharks and remain eighth on the ladder. Winger Xanda Georgievski is credited with their single try last week and will be a key player in pushing their attack down the left edge.
With three rounds left, Gungahlin will need a major turnaround to stay in the hunt.
The Blues’ strong form and home‑ground advantage make this a crucial opportunity to secure their top‑four position.
Tuggeranong Bushrangers v West Belconnen Warriors, Saturday 8th August, Greenway Oval, 3:00pm
The Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the West Belconnen Warriors in the tightest clash of the round.
The Bushrangers return from a bye sitting sixth with 10 points, while the Warriors sit just behind them in seventh with eight points. Both teams will aim to make a final push for a top four position, with their closest hurdles being each other.
West Belconnen struggled last week in their 32‑8 loss to the Kangaroos, unable to convert their tries and missing key opportunities. Tuggeranong, fresh and rested, will be eager to take advantage.
With both sides outside the top four but still mathematically alive, this matchup is critical for holding onto finals hopes.
Woden Valley Rams v Goulburn City Bulldogs, Saturday 8th August, Woden Park, 3:00pm
One of the most important clashes of the round sees the fourth‑placed Rams host the fifth‑placed Bulldogs at Woden Park. Both teams sit on 12 points, making this a direct battle for a top‑four position.
The Rams fell 26‑18 to the Blues last week, though fullback Sam Gash impressed again with 10 points.
Meanwhile, Goulburn dominated the Magpies 40‑12, with fullback Tomasi Bikaca scoring a hat‑trick. Bikaca’s performance moved him into equal first on the try‑scoring leaderboard alongside Tristan Eldridge.
With finals on the horizon and both teams level on points, this match could define the run home for each club.
