Kangaroos take giant leap towards the Minor Premiership

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos defeated the Belconnen United Sharks 14-12 in a tight, physical encounter at NSWRL HQ Bruce, which all but secures the minor premiership. 

The Sharks kicked off the action, and both sides applied fierce pressure early that resulted in multiple errors and opportunities across the field. The hits were aggressive, and the ball speed was electric, which created an action-packed first half. 

The Sharks had a shot at the line early after a Queanbeyan knock-on gifted them a scrum inside the visitors' 10m. But another error forced them to hand the ball over. Roos winger Patrick Broe made a run, taking the ball clean off the kick and breaking through the line to put them on the front foot.

Excitement grew for the Kangaroos when Brayden Omoeboh offloaded to winger Te Ngo Christie, who slid over the line. But Omoeboh’s pass was called forward, and the score remained nil-all. 

With 10 minutes left of the first half, the home side opened the point scoring. The Sharks were awarded a set restart 10m out from the line, and they were quick to take advantage.

Jordan Holten-Williams flicked the ball to Luke Connolly, who dived behind the posts for the first try of the game.

Holten-Williams followed up his assist with a clean conversion and the Sharks led 6-0. 

Broe broke through the line once again and gave his side a set from the halfway that resulted in another set of six inside the Sharks' 10m.

Belconnen performed an impressive defensive set with a try-saving tackle, but the Roos' speed and power came out on top.

With minutes left of play, Adam Quinlan passed the ball to Omoeboh, who redeemed his earlier pass with a four-pointer.

Lucas Thomson's conversion attempt was successful, and the score was drawn 6-all going into the break. 

The Kangaroos kicked off the second half, and the aggressive play continued to excite fans. 

Rhys Elton saw a line break opportunity and offloaded to Joshua Ayers, who sprinted 40m down the left edge to ground the ball over the line.

Thomson nailed the conversion, and the Roos led 12-6 for the first time in the match. 

Tristan Eldridge made a strong run that put the Sharks back in try-scoring range. Shortly after, Holten-Williams set Gideon Afemui up with a pass out the back, who then weaved around the defenders to score between the uprights.

Holten-Williams kicked to make it a six-point try and the score was levelled again. 

The field opened up as fatigue set in. Both sides continued to push to break the draw and secure a victory.

The Sharks were on the attack 20m from the line, but Broe scooped up the ball and stole the opportunity.

The home side did not give up and held Queanbeyan up over the line in a try-saving tackle with less than five minutes to go. 

After relentless efforts and intense play, the Kangaroos were awarded a penalty goal from a high tackle, and Thomson secured the lead 14-12.

The Sharks will face the Warriors next week in a battle of Belconnen, while the Kangaroos rest up before the final round of the season.
