Canberra Raiders forward Ata Mariota has re-signed with the Raiders until the end of 2028, further bolstering the club’s strong young talent.
Modelling his game off a world-class forward pack, Mariota has quickly emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the league.
Mariota has grown at the club, following in the footsteps of representative stars Josh Papalii and Joseph Tapine. He says thats learning from Papalii and Tapine has been massive.
“They pretty much shape my game. I try pick and stuff that they do and implement it in my game to make my game better,” Mariota said.
Mariota was clear that you can’t replace the most capped Raider in Josh Papalii, but rather use his mentorship and play his own game.
“It’s some big shoes to fill but as long as I play my game and do my thing it will come together.”
Ata Mariota had a rare debut to the NRL scene, when he entered a match against the Panthers as an 18th man in round 21 of the 2022 season. Since then, he has played 87 first grade games for the Raiders and his performance continues to improve rapidly each season, making a reliable force in Canberra’s forward pack.
Mariota came through the Raiders pathways, transitioning from SG Ball Cup into the NSW Cup at 19-years-old. Now at 24, his connection to the club has only strengthened and is reflected in his excitement surrounding the extension.
“It was an easy decision to re-sign. This club has given me my first opportunity and I want to repay it back,” Mariota said.
Mariota continues to show up each week and produce consistent games. The growth in his performance is massive, already recording over 130 more tackles than last season and is averaging at 90m running metres per game, already amassing last season’s numbers in less games.
Mariota is also a powerhouse on the attack, recording six more tackles breaks than last season and does not look like slowing down. This consistent improvement highlights the key player Mariota is in the Raiders squad.
Mariota’s consistency and versatility has been a major feature in his role in the squad. He started as a middle and is now starring in the second row. He promises that wherever Ricky Stuart puts him he will do his best. He has also played four 80-minute games this season, but that does not scare him.
“I give it my all and see where it takes me.”
Ata Mariota continues to be one of Raiders most exciting long-term players. Now, with his re-signing, the player who was shaped by the club will be a key element in shaping its future.
