The Toyota Forklifts Canberra Raiders are excited to announce the re-signing of New Zealand International Matt Timoko on a new deal with the club.
Timoko will take up his contract for the 2027 NRL season with a player option for 2028.
Making over 100 appearances for the club, Timoko has been one of the most consistent performers, rarely missing a game since debuting in 2020.
Averaging over 150 running metres a game, his form has led to representing New Zealand on nine occasions including a memorable try in their 2023 Pacific Championships win over Australia.
Matt has made Canberra his home and said his decision to remain with the Raiders was an easy one.
“Canberra has been a big part of my life ever since I moved here. I was just happy to get some clarity on my future which is very important to me,” Timoko said.
Having become the most experienced player in the backline, Matt has welcomed a leadership role within the squad to pass down knowledge to the younger members of the squad.
“I like to think of myself as someone who can guide people or give advice when they need it. I like to train the way I want to play. It’s just those little things that I wanted to add to my game this year which I’m really enjoying,” Timoko added.
The Raiders have locked down a number of young stars long-term which has made Timoko excited about the bright future of the club.
“Our whole spine is under 25 years old and now they’ve got a bit of experience under their belt. I think there’s big things to come next year and I’m just excited to be apart of it,” Timoko said.
Raiders NRL Recruitment Manager Chris Hutchison said the Raiders were thrilled for Matt to take up his player option, further boosting the outside back stocks as the club build towards a premiership.
“Matt has been a mainstay of the Raiders side for the past five seasons, and we’re stoked to see him stay here in Canberra,” Hutchison said.
“His strength and tackle-busting ability is second to none, and we see Matt as an important piece of our team moving forward.”
