Mam, Taylor, Todhunter shine as Australia win big in PNG

A grand tradition continud in Port Moresby on Saturday when the Australian Prime Minister's XIII men's and women's sides took on their PNG counterparts and the tries flowed.

With the Chiefs entering the NRL in 2028, excitement levels have reached new levels among the league-mad people in Papua New Guinea.

Australia's women's side enjoyed a day out with 12 tries as they racked up a 66-6 victory with Jada Taylor and Taneka Todhunter bagging hat-tricks and Tahlia O'Brien racking up 157 run metres.

After leading 28-6 at the break Australia went on with the job as Kasey Reh guided the team around the park superbly.

From the field: Wellington Albert

In the men's game, Ezra Mam grabbed a hat-trick and Jaxon Purdue grabbed a double as Australia ran out 60-10 winners.

Some great signs for PNG with the form of Sylvester Namo (102 run metres, 6 tackle breaks, 1 try) and Ila Alu (14 runs for 110 metres) while Jeremaiah Ben showed great pace to grab his team's second try.

Full-time: PNG hung tough but Australia run out 50-point winners on the back of an Ezra Mam hat-trick and 173 run metres from Tom Chester and nine tackle breaks from David Fifita.

Kurtis Morrin Try

79 min: Australia has the final say as Kurtis Morrin takes a nice pass from Owen Pattie and races 20m to score adjacent to the posts, Josh Curran gets the last shot at goal and bangs it over. Australia 60-10

Jeremaiah Ben Try

72 min: That's two for PNG as Jeremaiah Ben launches himself into the right-hand corner and evades the cover tackle of Ezra Mam. A superb finish by Ben as his speed and athleticism have the locals in raptures again. Ben can't convert from wide out. Australia 54-10

Sylvester Namo Try

68 min: The crowd erupts as Sylvester Namo powers over from close range after picking the ball up at dummy half and skittling defenders. In his fourth PM's XIII appearance, Namo has the home side's first try. Jeremaiah Ben adds the extras. Australia 54-6

Jaxon Purdue 2nd Try

65 min: Jaxon Purdue gets into dummy half from 10m out and steps past a couple of defenders to grab his second try of the day. Jamal Fogarty takes over the kicking duties and can't add the extras. Australia 54-0

61 min: Sanny Wabo finds space and looks to set up Jeremaiah Ben but the final pass goes astray.

60 min: A big hit by Josh Curran forces an error from Jeremaiah Ben but Braidon Burns hands it straight back with a mistake.

59 min: Braidon Burns loses the ball in contact and Emmanuel Alfred come up with it to give the home side a shot at points.

54 min: Billy Walters sees space and chips over the top but the ball hits the goal post and is cleaned up by Francis Sam.

Tom Chester Try

50 min: A try assist for Lachlan Galvin as he finds space down the right and sets up Tom Chester for the ninth Australian try. Nick Meaney makes it seven from nine conversions. Australia 50-0

Ezra Mam 3rd Try

47 min: That's a hat-trick for Ezra Mam as he chips over the top of the last defender Jeremaiah Ben and dots down after good lead-up by Nick Meaney. Australia 44-0

45 min: Jaxon Purdue puts the ball down with the tryline wide open and PNG have the chance to ruck the ball out on the back of a strong run by Sanny Wabo.

43 min: A kick out on the full by Lote Kuman puts PNG under early pressure but Australia fails to capitalise as David Fifita comes up with an error. 

Half-time: With Tom Hazelton (125 run metres, 6 tackle breaks, 2 line breaks, 1 try) standing tall and David Fifita busting five tackles the Australian team took control of the contest on the back of 59 per cent of possession.

Tallyn Da Silva Try

40 min: Tallyn Da Silva gets in on the action as he backs up a clean line break by fellow hooker Billy Walters and scoots away. Nick Meaney again adds the extras. Australia 38-0

Thomas Hazelton Try

37 min: Tom Hazelton caps a strong first half with a barnstorming try from 20m out after Josh Curran handles twice in the movement and Nick Meaney throws the final pass to the big Sharks prop. Australia 32-0

Ezra Mam 2nd Try

33 min: Brilliant footwork from Jaxon Purdue on the right edge before he sends it on to Tom Chester and back inside to Ezra Mam for the Bronco to complete a double. Nick Meaney converts. Australia 26-0

32 min: Billy Walters comes up with a forward pass as Australia's attack continues to splutter after a hot start.

28 min: Victor Ario with an error but Australia can't capitalise as they come up with another mistake to slip to nine of 14 sets competed.

27 min: Another error from Australia as Ezra Mam's flick pass goes astray and the ball rolls into touch.

25 min: Kurt Morrin comes up with a forward pass to Braidon Burns to hand PNG another chance as possession starts to even up (68 per cent to 32 per cent).

23 min: PNG centre Jayden Numapo leaves the field with a knee injury after landing awkwardly in a tackle.

22 min: Stanza Tandoa is taken on the last and PNG turn it over but David Fifita returns the favour as he loses the ball in contact.

20 min: A penalty against Josh Kerr for a high shot allows PNG down inside the red zone and the crowd lifts.

18 min: A mistake by Jock Madden gives PNG a rare chance to build some pressure but Bruce Bawase comes up with an error.

Nick Meaney Try

14 min: The left edge clicks for Australia as Lachlan Galvin and David Fifita combine to send Nick Meaney over in the corner. The wind blows the ball off the tee so a trainer comes in and puts his finger on the ball to keep it on the tee but the kick is wide. Australia 20-0

13 min: Sanny Wabo gets back to cover up a kick but is caught in goal and PNG are forced into a dropout.

Jaxon Purdue Try

10 min: Jaxon Purdue grabs the third try for Australia on the back of a huge charge from Tom Hazelton and then some nice ball-play from Lachlan Galvin which opens up the PNG defence. Nick Meaney fails to convert. Australia 16-0

Billy Walters Try

7 min: Billy Walters with a show-and-go out of dummy half and he gets over for the second try of the day. Nick Meaney converts. Australia 12-0

7 min: Ezra Mam gets over the line again but Murray Conners scrambles well and holds him up.

Ezra Mam Try

4 min: Lachlan Galvin goes to the line and puts Toby Couchman into a hole before the Dragons young gun sends Ezra Mam over for the opening try. Nick Meaney converts. Australia 6-0

Making her mark: The PNG side were well beaten but Mala Mark ripped in all day with 102 run metres and a couple of tackle breaks while Jenny David ran for 73 metres.

Taylor made for success: Jada Taylor had a day out in Port Moresby with three tries, 13 tackle breaks and 170 run metres.

Full-time: Australia have the biggest winning margin in the history of the women's PM's XIII clash on the back of 63 per cent of possession and 1579 run metres to 594.

Rory Owen Try

65 min: Rory Owen joins the party as she explodes into space from 25m out and posts the 12th try for the green and gold. Tayla Preston fails to convert. Australia 66-6

64 min: Anika Butler does well to cover up a Taneka Todhunter grubber and PNG look to come out of trouble.

Kasey Reh Try

61 min: Kasey Reh caps a sensational game with a four-pointer after Tori Shipton puts Jada Taylor into space and the winger delivers a perfectly timed pass for Reh to race away. Reh converts her own try. Australia 62-6

55 min: Tahlia O'Brien with a solo special from 50 metres out as she tiptoes down the sideline and swerves who way past Lilah Malabag to dot down under the sticks. Tayla Preston adds the extras. Australia 56-6

Jasmin Morrissey Try

53 min: Taneka Todhunter skips out of dummy half and picks up Bree Chester who sends it on to Jasmin Morrissey to cross for Australia's ninth try which is converted by Tayla Preston. Australia 50-6

Taneka Todhunter 3rd Try

50 min: Not to be outdone by Jada Taylor, Taneka Todhunter grabs a hat-trick with another sharp dart out of dummy half from close range. Tayla Preston converts. Australia 44-6

46 min: That's a hat-trick for Jada Taylor as Tayla Preston and Tahlia O'Brien combine to send the winger over. Taylor has racked up 11 tackle breaks and 103 run metres in a sizzling display. Australia 38-6

43 min: Cynthia Peters with a meek end to as she takes on the line and is easily wrapped up 5m out.

41 min: Australia make a meal of the catching the kick-off and are forced into a line dropout. Some enterprising attack from PNG but Lilah Malabag is shut down on the last.

Tayla Preston Try

39 min: On the back of a clean line break by Jada Taylor, Australia work to close range and Kasey Reh grubbers expertly for Tayla Preston to follow through and score. Preston converts. Australia 34-6

Half-time: Australia take a 22-point lead to the break courtesy of doubles to Jada Taylor and Taneka Todhunter and the classy playmaking skills of Kasey Reh, who came up with two try assists and two line break assists.

Taneka Todhunter 2nd Try

34 min: Kasey Reh takes the ball one off the ruck 30m out and busts the line with a great step before sending a pass back inside for Taneka Todhunter to make it a double in quick time. Georgia Hannaway adds the extras. Australia 28-6

Taneka Todhunter Try

29 min: Taneka Todhunter scoots out of dummy half from 10m out and can't be stopped. A strong charge by Khyliah Gray had put the defence on the back foot and Todhunter capitalised. Georgia Hannaway converts. Australia 22-6

28 min: Ua Ravu again gets caught on the last and PNG turn the ball over 20m out from the Australia line.

27 min: Jecinta Garry is placed on report for a shoulder charge and Australia go on the attack but Ruby-Jean Kennard-Ellis pushes a poor offload and the ball is turned over.

Spain's great escape

26 min: Lucy Spain does a great job to get back and cover up a kick and bring it back 20 metres on a weaving run.

22 min: An error by Lucy Spain hands PNG a chance but Ua Ravu is shut down by Chloe Jackson on the last tackle and the movement comes to an abrupt halt.

20 min: Time for a drinks break in the humid conditions.

Jada Taylor 2nd Try

18 min: Georgia Hannaway with a peach of a cut-out pass for Jada Taylor to cruise over untouched on the left edge. Hannaway converts her own try. Australia 16-6

Andie Robinson Try

14 min: On the back of a mistake by PNG fullback Anika Butler the Australian team has a set scrum 10m out and they go right where Kasey Reh sends Andie Robinson over. Georgia Hannaway fails to convert. Australia 10-6

Josephine Howard Try

9 min: PNG hit back as Josephine Howard gets down low and burrows over from dummy half to score next to the posts. The conversion is good from Gemma Walker. 6-6

Jada Taylor Try

5 min: Jada Taylor on the board early for Australia after slick hands to the left with Rory Owen throwing the final pass. Georgia Hannaway converts superbly from touch in the windy conditions. Australia 6-0
