Match Report: Raiders hold off Roosters for inspiring win

The Raiders have held off a second half comeback to beat the Sydney Roosters 14-12 at GIO Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Roosters grabbed two tries to the Raiders one but it was Sam Williams' boot that gave the Raiders the advantage nailing four penalty goals.

The Raiders completed all of their first half sets to take a 12-0 advantage into the break and were able to hold off a defiant Roosters outfit in the second half.

It took ten minutes for the scoring to be opened with Jordan Rapana the recipient of a perfect cut-out pass from Brad Abbey to go over in the corner for the Raiders.

The Raiders would extend their advantage five minutes later with a penalty goal off the boot of Williams after Dunamis Lui was tackled without the ball.

The scoring again went up by two with Williams adding another penalty goal with ten minutes remaining in the first half to make the score 10-0.

The Roosters should have had their first points late in the second half when Ryan Matterson linked with Mitchell Aubusson who couldn't hold possession after he was through the line.

The scoring trend continued for the Raiders with another penalty goal converted by Williams following a dangerous tackle on Luke Bateman with three minutes left in the first stanza.

It didn't take the Roosters long in the second half to find their gear as James Tedesco gave off a lovely short ball to their captain Boyd Cordner to go over untouched.

The Raiders were inches away from extending their advantage with a Blake Austin grubber being knocked on by Sia Soliola just inside the dead ball line.

Raiders forward Luke Bateman was forced from the field for a HIA with just under half an hour remaining following a heavy collision with Latrell Mitchell.

The Raiders were dealt another blow when fullback Brad Abbey was forced from the field for a HIA after being on the receiving end of a high tackle from Mitchell.

Midway through the second half and the scores were levelled with Victor Radley crashing over from close range and Mitchell adding the extras.

The Raiders regained the advantage with ten minutes left in the match with Williams nailing his fourth penalty goal.

A desperation tackle from Soliola to take Joseph Manu into touch with six minutes remaining was enough for the Raiders to hold on and grab the victory.

Raiders 14 (Tries: Rapana Goals: Williams 5/5) def Roosters 12 (Tries: Cordner, Radley Goals: Mitchell 2/2)
