Junior Reps Round 5 Preview

The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup side have started the season in fine form with three wins from four matches and will be looking to add another scalp this weekend.

With the competition passing the halfway point of the regular season this weekend, coach John Hawke has been impressed by his side so far but isn’t getting complacent.

“I’m pretty happy with where we are at,” Hawke said. “But at the end of the day, these girls are still learning and evolving.

“You kind of saw that with our hiccup against the Wests Tigers. It was down to our preparation, more than it was down to the game itself. These girls are learning each week how to prepare for games and that it doesn’t matter who you are playing – you have to prepare well to play well.”

After bouncing back to winning ways last weekend against the Indigenous Academy, Hawke was impressed as his side learned their lessons.

“We’re knocking down walls, especially the bounce back from having a loss the week before,” Hawke said. “They knuckled down and prepared well.

“I don’t think we played that well in attack against the Indigenous Academy, we were still a bit clunky but our defensive efforts were outstanding because we prepared well.

The team enter Round 5 of the competition sitting in second place on the ladder and will host a constantly improving Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs outfit this weekend.

“The Bulldogs seem to be getting better every game they play,” Hawke said. “They’re very physical, they always have a big pack and like to dominate through the middle.

“If we can hold our own in the middle, I think we’re a chance to get them on the edges.”
